I believe that an “archival” photograph is one that signals, above all, profound human emotions. It triggers some or all of the five senses…as though you can almost hear the subject’s surroundings or feel the wind that’s blowing her hair. An archival photograph draws interest and makes you take a step closer for that second, longer look. It focuses on, and reveals, the subject’s innocence, candor, mood, and tone. An archival photograph is all about affect; it is a visual freeze-frame of someone or something the way you want to remember them in the years ahead. It is real, it is timeless, and it is natural.
